Authority
The Role of the Authority
The Broads Authority is a statutory body and its general duty is to manage the Broads for the purposes of:
(a) conserving and enhancing the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Broads;
(b) promoting opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the Broads by the public; and
(c) protecting the interests of navigation.
It must also consider the needs of agriculture and forestry, and the economic and social interests of those who live or work in the Broads.
You can find out in this section how the organisation works: who the people are, where the money comes from, the legal framework and the overall Strategy.
You can also find out about how you can get involved - through meetings and consultations, or by volunteering.
History, Membership and Structure
The members who sit on the Broads Authority are appointed from local councils and by the Secretary of State for the Environment. A full list of Broads Authority members is available in our Membership section with links to biographies of each individual member. The Authority was set up by an Act of Parliament called the Broads Act. The structure of the Broads Authority includes several committees and forums. Find out which members sit on each committee under Committee Membership.
Committees and Forums
The Broads Authority members make decisions and consult on the management of the Broads at bi-monthly members' meetings and at smaller meetings for each of the individual committees and forums. The minutes and agendas for the Broads Authority and for all Committees and Forums are now all available online. We also hold a public meeting and invite members of the public to send us questions prior to committee meetings. Details of Committee Membership are also available for the Planning Committee, Navigation Committee and Standards Committee.
