River Works Programme

Navigation Works Team

Refurbishing moorings at Thorpe moorings
The Navigation Works Team work closely with the Dockyard Team, but have different priorities. They are a busy committed team and concentrate on maintaining and refurbishing the Broads Authority’s 24hr moorings.

The team are in the process of installing new moorings at Horning Marshes (River Ant), and stage one has been completed. This mooring is very popular, and it is hoped that stage two will begin soon which will give another 100metres of safe mooring. Completion is planned this year.

There has also been been a 5 year installation programme to install safety ladders and chains to existing moorings. This safety equipment has assisted several people in getting out of the water after accidently falling in.

Other tasks the team undertake are maintaining and the installation of signage, bridge Height gauge boards, and removal of navigation obstructions.
The team also undertake major tree removal works during the winter that can restrict navigation along the 125km of waterways, and cut the aquatic plants that grow quickly and can impede navigation.  The 2010/2011 work programme illustrates the variety of areas and tasks that the team undertake.

The Weed Harvester is shown on the photograph below.

During the winter the team work with Broadsword, a volunteer arm of the Broads Society mainly involved with assisting the winter tree cutting programme. Broadsword meet either on a Saturday or Sunday 6 times during the winter months, and are always in need of new volunteers.
If you would like to volunteer with Broadsword contact David Capp direct on 01603 712601
The works team are also always looking to recruit additional volunteers- if you would be interested, please contact Richard Farley or Matt Dane who will be happy to arrange a taster day to allow you to see what the team do. (Personal protective equipment will be supplied and a short induction will take place for your own safety.)

Richard Farley  is responsible for the refit programme of the Patrol launches/ Trip Boats and Work boats within the team assisted by Rob Clarke-Senior Navigation Fitter and Delwin Delcoure-Navigation Fitter (seasonal). Richard manages the electric charging pillar installations /servicing and repairs, and will try to answer any queries on the matter. An updated guide will also shortly be available.
