Hiring out your boat and carrying passengers

Boating – Hiring Out Your Boat and Carrying Passengers

If you are thinking of hiring out boats as a business or just as an additional extra with your holiday cottage, then you need to be aware of the following requirements.

Hire Boat Licensing

Currently all powered craft let for hire to the public (un-skippered vessels) within the Broads Authority Executive Area need to meet the requirements of the Broads Authority Powered Hire Boat Licensing Scheme.

Passenger vessels (skippered vessels) will be required from the 1st April 2012, to comply with the Broads Authority Passenger Boat Licensing Scheme. Please contact Steve Birtles (Head of Safety Management) on 01603 756078 to find out more about the scheme.

Hire & Passenger Boat Safety

Relevant vessels let for hire or reward needs to comply with the Boat Safety Standards relevant to hire craft.

Currently (September 2011), this means ensuring compliance with The Boat Safety Scheme (BSS)1st Edition (2002) guide and ensuring a valid copy of the certificate has been sent to the Broads Authority Tolls office. Please be aware that the Broads Authority is wholly independent from the BSS and therefore we do not automatically receive certificate copies.

Hire & Passenger Boat Tolls & Registration

All boats within the Broads Authority Executive Area need to be registered and pay an annual toll (from 1st April to 31st March each year).

Please contact the Tolls Office on 01603 756080 or at tolls@broads-authority.gov.uk for further information.

Planning Permission You may need to apply for planning permission for a change of use for your moorings, but in the first instance please contact our Planning Team on 01603 756028 or at planning@broads-authority.gov.uk
