Notice to Mariners

A Notice to Mariners is required as stated in the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Act 1988, whenever anyone undertakes works that may significantly affect the navigation, for example creating severe height or width restriction or the need for a river closure.

Anything affecting the navigation requires a minimum of 35 days' written notice to allow the Broads Authority time to publish details in a local newspaper as required under the Act.

The following information is required in order to complete and publish a Notice to Mariners.

  • Brief description of the works
  • Location of the works
  • Duration of the works - start and completion (date and time)
  • Those parties likely to be affected
  • Name and address of person to receive the re-charged bill for the Notice
  • Contact details for further information and any complaints received

Further details can be found regarding undertaking works within the navigation area in the Navigation Works Guidance document. The document has been produced to advise anyone wishing to carry out works within the Broads river system of legislation requirements, provide practical health and safety advice and highlight other possible considerations. Not all sections will apply to all projects, but are provided for information. Please read the Navigation Works Guidance notes and if you find that you require a Works Licence an application form can be downloaded.

A Notice to Mariners application form is available from this link.

The cost of a Notice to Mariners varies; depending on the size of the notice, number of words, etc, but as a rough guide prices usually start at around £130.00 progressing to upwards of £450.00 for publication, with an additional standard charge of £30.00 to cover administration costs.

In this section you will find all current and past Notice to Mariners issued by the Broads Authority and those published by other authorities with a potential impact on the Broads and its surrounding areas.
