GYPA Notice 01 2008
PORT OF GREAT YARMOUTH
NOTICE TO MARINERS
No. 1 of 2008
Outer Harbour South Breakwater Construction
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on or about the 1st March 2008, the construction of the
Outer Harbour South Breakwater will commence (see also Notice to Mariners No. 4, 2007). Marine
plant and equipment will be operating east and north-east of the River Port entrance and within
close proximity to the entrance. These vessels will exhibit lights as required by the International
Collision Regulations and will maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 12. Mariners should give
these vessels as wide a berth as possible.
Rocks will be placed along the line of the new south breakwater and will form a submerged or
semi-submerged obstruction. Mariners navigating into and out of the port should stay south of a
line running due east from the south side of the North Pier and stay out of the Marine Construction
Area mentioned in Notice to Mariners No. 4 of 2007.
Tidal flows in and around the River Port entrance and the construction zone will vary in nature and
mariners should navigate through these areas with caution. There are pronounced effects on the
flood tide in this area and northerly sets may be experienced during both the flood and ebb tides.
There may be delays to vessels during periods of strong tidal flows and Ships’ Masters should
employ the services of a Pilot if in doubt.
The amber flood tide light on the South Pier (52° 34.33N, 01° 44.28E) has been permanently
extinguished.
To avoid unnecessary delays, mariners are reminded to give ETAs on departure from last port or
installation and ETDs should be provided at least 2 hours prior to departure. Both ETAs and ETDs
should be updated as necessary.
If necessary vessels should contact Port Operations for advice on VHF Channel 12.
Notice to Mariners Numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of 2007 are still in force.
