GYPC Notice 05 2009

PORT OF GREAT YARMOUTH

NOTICE TO MARINERS

No. 5 OF 2009

Great Yarmouth -River Yare -Breydon Bridge
Closure of Main Lifting Span to Navigation

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN of essential and major repair works to the Breydon Bridge
lifting mechanism from 2nd November 2009 to 4th December 2009. During the
aforementioned period the centre span will not be able to lift and will be closed to ALL
navigation. The bridge side spans will still be available to those vessels that have sufficient
clearance to pass under those spans.

Scaffolding will be erected under the bridge centre span projecting 2.2 metres down from
the bridge structure. At times barges and vessels will be manoeuvring in the area and
mooring alongside the buttresses with men working in the vicinity and on the scaffolding.
Obstructions will be illuminated and warning signs erected under the bridge. The red stop
lights will be illuminated prohibiting any passage through the centre span.

Mariners are reminded that the side spans of the Breydon Bridge have a greater clearance
than the closed centre span and passage under the side spans is still permitted for those
vessels that have sufficient clearance. Vessels transiting the side spans should keep a
good lookout for work craft operating on or near the centre span and heed the advice given
by the safety boat/s in attendance.

River users are advised to approach the area with caution, stay clear of the bridge centre
span, heed signs, notice boards and instructions and navigate with care until past and clear
of the bridge.
