Associated British Ports Lowestoft

Local Notice to Mariners No 6 2007

Commercial Operations Involving Swimmers

Port users are advised that any commercial operation involving 'swimmers' in the commercial Port area of Lowestoft, Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club, Lowestoft Haven Marina and the main navigation channel to Oulton Broad must have a written Safe System of Work with the appropriate Risk Assessments prior to commencing any operations involving ‘swimmers’.

A completed ‘Commercial Operations Involving Swimmers‘ Request Form as attached must be sent to and approved by Lowestoft Port Control before commercial operations requiring the use of ‘swimmers’ are undertaken in the areas described above.

Appropriate communications must be in place and maintained with Lowestoft Port Control at all stages of the operation.

For the purpose of this notice a ‘swimmer’ is defined as a person who enters the water to undertake a commercial operation within the Port area and who is not subject to the requirements of the Diving at Work Regulations 1997 or Merchant Shipping (Diving Safety) Regulations 2002.

(A ‘swimmer’ does not normally use compressed air breathing apparatus.)
