The Work of Broads Radio Control

Broads Radio Control is based at our Ludham Field Base, close to the River Thurne.

It is equipped with VHF radios, computer links, mobile and landline telephones. Staffed by an experienced member of the Waterways team, it deals with a range of operations from routine enquiries to emergency liaison with the Coastguard, Police or Environment Agency.

This busy office can receive up to 100 telephone calls a day during peak season so please be patient and do leave a message on the answerphone provided.

If you are calling about an emergency always contact the appropriate service direct by dialling 999. The services will then contact Broads Radio Control if required.

The office in staffed from 9.00am to 6.00pm from Easter to the end of October. The answerphone is also checked up to 9.00pm each evening in the summer season.

In winter the phone is covered from 9.00am to 5.00pm each day. For emergencies only, our staff can be called out of hours via the Coastguard.

Carrow Bridge on the River Wensum in Norwich is also operated from this office, and can be raised for craft unable to drop their gear to pass under. With a few restrictions, a minimum of two hours' notice is required for a bridge lift. More notice is preferable as bridge fitters, who are on a call-out rota, have to attend.

Enquiries regarding navigation on the Broads should be directed to this office.

The Broads Radio Controller can be reached on 01692 678459 or VHF channel 12.
