Listen to new Broads podcasts online

Norfolk Tourism and the Broads Authority, working with local digital media company Aperçu, have produced a new online audio experience introducing what The Broads has to offer visitors on holiday or local residents planning a day out.

Eight Broads podcasts, each on a different theme: birds, boating, walking, cycling, canoeing, sailing, Barton Broad and How Hill, can be downloaded via The Norfolk Broads page at www.visitnorfolk.co.uk and at www.broads-authority.gov.uk/visiting.html.

Richard Daniel, presenter of Home Planet on BBC Radio 4 introduces each podcast, which feature interviews with local people who are passionate about The Broads.

Some highlights:

  • Derek Moore former Director of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust talks about Carlton Marshes near Oulton Broad and Jennifer Smart, RSPB, explores Breydon Water.
  • Charles and Joy Boldero cover their walks for the EDP.
  • Peter Howe, Broadland Cycle Hire introduces cycling routes.
  • Colin Hancy who hires canoes in Bungay and Aran Peddar from Whitlingham Country Park look at canoeing opportunities.
  • Rodney Storey an instructor with Hunter’s Fleet extols the joys of sailing.
  • David Holmes, How Hill Trust, promotes How Hill and Robin Jeffries of the Broads Authority goes out on the Electric Eel.
  • Mark Smith of the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind introduces Barton Broad boardwalk, a place to “enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside”. The boardwalk is suitable for wheelchair users, and is designed to be accessible to blind and partially sighted visitors. Mark was also involved in the boardwalk project to make it more user-friendly for visitors with sensory impairment.

Lydia Smith, Norfolk Tourism Team Manager said: “The podcasts are a first for Norfolk Tourism and the Broads Authority. It is getting more and more important to bring web content alive with the atmosphere of the county. These interviews with very knowledgeable local people provide an intimate introduction to this very special part of Norfolk.”

Karen Sayer of the Broads Authority said: ”The podcasts paint a mind’s eye picture of our magical wetland and will inspire listeners to explore it for themselves.”

The podcasts have been produced with funding from the Broads Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund and Norfolk Tourism.

Norfolk Tourism is the county's established public and private industry partnership. Funded by its 55 partner organisations, the partnership is designed to act as a forum for all Norfolk's tourism businesses and local authorities, www.visitnorfolk.co.uk, tel. 01603 222846.
