Tolls and Registration

A toll must be paid on any vessel kept in the Broads Authority's area. Annual tolls are available for vessels kept or used in the navigation area for more than 28 days in any tolls year. Short visit tolls are available for periods of up to 28 days within any tolls year. The tolls year runs from 1 April to 31 March the following year.

Every vessel kept in the Broads area for more than 28 days must be registered with the Broads Authority; registration is free.

Annual toll renewals can be paid by post, by phone using a credit or debit card, or by calling into the Broads Authority main office at 18 Colegate, Norwich , NR3 1BQ.

For new applications or transfers of ownership, you will need to complete an Application for Registration and Payment of Toll form and return it before card payments can be accepted.

Short visit tolls are available from the Broads Authority main office at 18 Colegate, Norwich , NR3 1BQ, Broads Authority Information Centres (open April - October) and some yacht stations and boatyards (from April - October)

Boat Safety Standards

The Broads Authority introduced the National Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) to the Broads with its Boat Safety Standards Byelaws 2006 which came into force on the 1 April 2007.

The BSS applies to all boats with engines and/or cooking, heating, lighting, refrigerating and other domestic appliances, but does not apply to open boats propelled solely by outboard motors and not fitted with any of the above appliances.

The Broads Authority Boat Safety Standards Byelaws 2006 will be introduced in stages:

1 April 2007   Hire craft over 30 sqm
Private motor craft of 21 sqm and above, and motorised sailing craft of 21 sqm and above with engines of 10 hp and above 
1 April 2008   All Remaining hire craft
Private motor craft of 11 sqm and above, and motorised sailing craft of 11 sqm and above with engines of 10 hp and above
1 April 2009   Remaining private motor craft
All private sailing craft
