Opportunities to serve on Broads Authority

An opportunity exists for two new members to serve on the Broads Authority from June 2005.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is seeking people from all backgrounds and cultures to advise on the future of this unique and internationally important wetland.

One of the new members must have an understanding of boating issues and will be appointed after consultation with boating interest groups. Applications from women, young and disabled people and members of ethnic minorities are particularly welcome, as these groups are under-represented among the membership.

The appointment will begin on 1 June 2005 initially for three years with the option of re-appointment for up to ten years. The successful candidates will need to commit to a minimum of eight meetings a year on weekdays. The position is unsalaried but expenses will be paid.

The Broads Authority is a member of the National Park family but was established under different legislation because of the importance of navigation on the Broads. It works to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the wetland, to promote public enjoyment of the area and to protect the interests of navigation.

Ministers will be looking for candidates who understand the concept and practice of sustainable development and will ensure a balanced range of local, national and specialist interests. The successful applicants will be expected to provide a national voice on the Authority and take a particular interest in strategic issues such as conservation, recreation, planning, access and resources.

Candidates will be expected to:

  • Represent the national interest – including the views of people not living in or near the Broads;
  • Understand issues affecting the Broads, and work to achieve the Broads’ purposes;
  • Bring experience of wider issues, which could include work with young people, environmental projects, social inclusion work, or an active interest in outdoor recreation;
  • Contribute positively to debate within the Authority;
  • Make decisions on any aspects of Broads management;
  • Commit to a minimum of eight meetings a year, most of which are in working hours.

Applications and further details can be obtained from Carol Foster at the Countryside Agency, John Dower House, Crescent Place, Cheltenham, Gloucester, GL50 3RA. Tel: 01242 533 284; fax 01242 584 270; email: carol.foster@countryside.gov.uk

Application forms are also available on the Defra web site.

The closing date is Monday 18 October.
