Land opens to the public in the Broads
Several areas of countryside in the Broads opened to the public from
October 31st as the new right of access in the East of England came
into force.
About 150 ha in the Broads, made up of 15 areas of common and three
areas of open country have become accessible for recreaction.
Herringfleet Hills, near Somerleyton and part of Outney Common in
Bungay, have been marked as “open country”, defined as mountain,
moorland, downland and heathland, on maps.
The East and West of England make up the final pieces of the
country’s right to roam jigsaw, which was introduced under the
Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. The Act allows walkers to enjoy
almost three quarters of a million hectares of land which was
previously out of bounds.
The Broads Local Access Forum will advise the Broads Authority in managing access on these new areas.
