Broads Authority sticks with the Broads National Park name
The Broads Authority’s officers are recommending that it stick to its decision to change the name of the Broads to the Broads National Park.
This recommendation is made in a report to the Broads Authority on the Authority’s Private Bill which aims to improve safety for the public and modernise the constitution. It follows consultation with the people of Norfolk and Suffolk, and with the rest of the family of national parks in the UK, who commented that:
“The National Park Authorities of the UK recognise that the Broads has an equivalent status to a national park, is a member of the family and should be able to reflect that in the name of the Authority and the area.”
Locally the issue has been whether the area should be called the Norfolk Broads National Park or the Broads National Park. Strong feelings were reflected on both sides by an ITV Anglia poll, with 90 respondents supporting Norfolk Broads and 102 disagreeing. Local businesses in Suffolk were also split on the issue.
The important change is the incorporation of the words National Park in the name of the area. To keep Suffolk residents on board the Authority proposes to change the name of the area to the Broads National Park and retain the name of the Broads Authority.
The Private Bill is still on the timetable that was set at the beginning of the process. It will be finalised at the end of September and deposited in Parliament in November.
