Extra expenditure on the Broads
The Broads Authority will be asked at its meeting on 28 July to approve 15 extra projects for funding this year. They include improving access and information for the public, the purchase of a dual fuel pool car for staff, the production of a safety DVD for holiday-makers and the purchase and development of a new 24 hour mooring on the River Waveney.
The Authority had been cutting back on its budgets in the expectation of a very low settlement from the Government. Very late in the day Defra found the resources to maintain the Authority’s budgets at their existing level. The result is that the Authority will be able to spend an extra £141,000 of National Park Grant this financial year on practical projects in the Broads.
Foremost on the list of projects, which encompass all aspects of the Authority’s work, are those that will improve access to the Broads and provide better information to the public. This includes improved signage, creating new footpaths and supporting the development of a slipway on the River Waveney for disabled anglers.
Although the money is from the Authority’s National Park Grant some of it is recommended to be spent on projects that would normally be funded from the Navigation income. These include the purchase and development of a new 24 hour mooring on the River Waveney, information signs at five mooring sites, a safety DVD for visitors on holiday and improved moorings at Geldeston with facilities for launching a canoe.
