How Hill moorings to be made safe and accessible

Work will start on Monday (6 February) on building safety features into the newly upgraded Broads Authority 24 hour moorings at How Hill, near Ludham, ready for use at Easter.

Two strips of wood fendering will be placed the length of the 312 m of steel piling to soften the mooring for boats. Safety ladders will be installed at 50 m intervals.

The £9,000 cost is being absorbed by BESL (Broadland Environmental Services Ltd) who are working in partnership with the Broads Authority and are undertaking the project as part of their flood defence work.

The footpath along the floodwall is being raised and covered with crushed concrete to create a hard, easily accessible surface, and 100 mooring posts are being installed at a total cost of £17,500.

The staithe area around Toad Hole Cottage museum is to be enhanced at a cost of
£35,800 by the Broads Authority projects team and Edmund Nuttall to make it accessible to people in wheelchairs. A mooring for day boats designed for people with disabilities is being dredged out and the quay heading is to be re-piled. The land is to be levelled and a new footbridge realigned across the dyke in front of the cottage.
