Opportunities to serve on Broads Authority
WANTED: Three new Broads Authority members to help shape the future of the Broads.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is seeking people with a keen interest in the Broads to advise the Authority on the future of this internationally important wetland and much loved boating area. The Authority is committed to equal opportunities and applications from women, young and disabled people and members of ethnic minorities are particularly welcome.
The appointment will begin from May 2007 for three years with the possibility of re-appointment for up to 10 years. The successful candidates will need to commit to a minimum of seven whole day meetings a year on weekdays. The position is unsalaried although a small allowance and expenses will be paid.
This is a challenging and exciting time for the Broads Authority, which is a member of the national park family. It is embarking on a major new initiative of whole valley management, promoting a Private Bill to make important changes to its legislation and moving to new offices in late 2007/early 2008. Its duties are to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Broads, to promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the area by the public and to protect the interests of navigation.
Ministers will be looking for candidates who understand the practice of sustainable development and will ensure a balanced range of local, national and specialist interests. The successful applicants will be expected to provide a national voice on the Authority and take a particular interest in strategic issues covering conservation, recreation, planning, access and resource management.
