Puppets take hot topic of climate change into schools
A puppet company which has been raising awareness of the hot topic of climate change throughout the Broads this summer is to take its message into schools this autumn.
Nutmeg Puppet Company gave 15 free outdoor performances of the show, called 'Heatwave', to a total audience of over 1000 people in the northern and southern Broads between 23 July and 23 August. Extremes of weather - heatwave, drought and thunderstorms - were the perfect backdrop to illustrate their message but despite this only one show at Oulton Broad had to be cancelled and donations of £436 were made.
Now Nutmeg Puppet Company is performing 15 more shows combined with 10 workshops in schools. Teachers’ booklets of background information and teaching ideas accompany the show.
The 45 minute show about climate change and how we can adapt to it is suitable for children aged five to 11 years in small schools or 8-10 years in larger schools.
The innovative show is specially written by company members who craft the puppet characters and masks and perform the much loved show.
The show was funded by £3000 from the Broads Authority and £11,000 from the Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund, provided by Defra.
Lottie Carlton, Broads Authority Events Ranger said: “It’s really important to get the message about the effects of climate change across to the next generation and this is an imaginative and fun way to do it which can be easily grasped by young children. My two youngest girls loved the show and still like to sing one of the songs.”
