Public views sought on new Broads planning policies

The public is being asked to give its views on a new set of planning policies for the Broads.

The Broads Authority is currently consulting on issues and options for the Development Control Policies Development Plan Document (DPD) which will be used in determining everyday planning applications.

Development Control is part of a suite of documents under the new Local Development Framework which has replaced the Local Plan. Its policies will focus on key planning and development issues that affect those who live in, work in and visit the Broads.

The Development Control Policies DPD will be supported by a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) on development and flood risk which will set out more detailed policy.

Gillian Morgan, Director of Planning and Strategy said: “The wetland environment and character of Broads villages are likely to come under increasing development pressures. Appropriate types and levels of development within the flood plain, as flood risk increases due to climate change and coastal submergence, must also be considered. It is therefore important that anyone with an interest in future planning decisions lets us know now which of the various options and sub-options they prefer to be taken forward.”

The development of these documents is at an early stage. The options have been developed from policies in the current local plan, national policy statements and responses from a leaflet consultation. The four main themes cover respecting the environment and cultural assets, use and enjoyment of land and water, fostering communities, and development and flood risk. The consultation is largely informal and closes on 10 August.

The Broads Authority will discuss the responses with key interest groups and will publish its preferred options in December for further consultation.
