Wherries at the bottom of the garden

Three traditional Broads wherries will be on show in the Broadland village of Ludham as part of its annual Open Gardens Day -  two at the bottom of riverside gardens - this weekend.

On Saturday (June 20) two very different wherries from the Edwardian era -- the 111 year old black sailed trader Albion and the elegant, 104 year-old pleasure wherry Hathor will be sailing in company taking  members of the Albion Trust on a day sail from Womack Water to Ranworth Broad. After lunch the guests will swap boats for the sail home

On Sunday the only two remaining trading wherries, Albion and Maud, will be open to the public at the bottom of private gardens  while Hathor will be on show at Womack Staithe in the middle of Ludham village.  This will provide an unusual opportunity to compare original trading wherries with a pleasure wherry from the same era.

Meanwhile an art show will be taking place in the Albion Wherry Yard’s boatshed with over thirty artists exhibiting their work. There will also be a classic car display.

An all day ticket to view the 12 gardens on either side of Womack Water costs £4 (children under 12 are free). There is a free ferry boat ride and car park and no additional charge for visiting the wherries or the art show.
