Broads hosts first UK & Ireland Lakes Network meeting
Around 50 invited guests from around the country took part in the first open meeting of the newly formed UK & Ireland Lakes Network, at Wayford Bridge Inn earlier this month.
The two day event comprised presentations and lively discussion on the first day, followed by a trip out to the Upper Thurne on Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s electric boats, the next day.
The network aims to:-
• Promote the benefit of healthy lakes.
• Bring together organisations and individuals that have a responsibility and a desire to protect and manage lake environments
• Develop and share knowledge and experience on best practice in lake and catchment management.
• Seek to influence policies, individually or collectively, that will promote healthy lakes with sustainably managed catchments
Speakers included Dr Tillmann Stotelle, from Lake Constance in Germany, who represented the international Living Lakes network, to which the UK & Ireland Lakes Network is closely aligned.
His talk demonstrated how such regional groupings of those interested in lake management, for social, economic and environmental reasons, can make a real difference through sharing information and initiating joint projects.
The next regional meeting is planned for Scotland in early 2011.
