Walk the Broads for World Wetlands Day

homepage-imageTwo walks to celebrate World Wetlands Day are being held in The Broads – Britain’s most important wetland - on Tuesday February 2nd.

In the morning, a five mile Winter Wildfowl walk is being held at Hardley Flood on the River Chet, near Loddon, and in the afternoon Broads Authority and Natural England rangers will lead a special two mile walk around the Bure Marshes in an area not normally open to the public.

World Wetlands Day marks the date of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands nearly 40 years ago on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar.  Each year, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits.

The morning walk is from 10am -12.30pm. A Broads Authority countryside ranger will point out the amazing wildfowl of the peaceful Chet Valley and explain why wetlands are so special. The walk is free and suitable for children over nine years old. You will need to phone before joining the walk, however, as the site is liable to flood and details may change.

Wellington boots will be needed for the Bure Marshes walk even if the weather is sunny and dry. It’s free and takes place from 1.30pm- 4pm but booking is essential. Contact the Broads Authority for both walks on 01603 610734.
