A carnival to celebrate the rich variety of wildlife found in the Broads is being held by the Broads Authority at the Forum, Norwich, on Sunday 7 March, 10 am - 4pm.

“Wake up to Wildlife” launches the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity in Norfolk.

People will be dressed as exotic Broads wildlife while visitors create wildlife masks and hang environmental promises on a pledge tree.

The Authority’s own Pond Doctor will be showing children how to inspect mini beasts with microscopes and giving away barley straw bags which clear ponds of algae. Examples of invasive alien plants and animals which are damaging the Broads will be on show.

Some 15 wildlife organisations will be represented, among them Norfolk Wildlife Trust, the RSPB, Norwich Bat Group, Natural England, Environment Agency, Fairhaven Garden Trust and Norfolk Biodiversity Partnership.

Activities will include flags, silk painting, badge making, dragonfly making and stone painting. A Samba band will play between 11am and 12 noon and 2pm-3pm.

The event will be linked with the library’s story time for children.

The United Nations is this year highlighting the importance of biodiversity – the variety of life on Earth – which is essential for sustaining natural living systems and ecosystems that provide us with food, fuel, health and wealth.
