Broads Country Park becomes a clearway

The lane running through Whitlingham Country Park at Trowse has been widened and resurfaced and is now a clearway, prohibiting car parking on the verge. A 20mph speed limit is also in force.

Three pay and display car parks are available for visitor parking and a fourth is to be created close to the visitor centre and the Great Broad by Easter. Drivers who park on the roadside will now face a fine.

David Adler, chairman of the Whitlingham Country Park Charitable Trust, said: “Our aim is to make Whitlingham Country Park safer and more enjoyable for cyclists and walkers. All income from the car parks will be invested in maintaining and improving the park which is used regularly by local residents and lovers of the Broads.”

An annual parking permit is available for regular visitors and is priced at £25 until Easter. The car parking prices are being held until Easter despite the VAT increase.

The upgrading of the single track, potholed lane and the conversion of the old quarry site to a car park will mark the completion of Whitlingham Country Park, which has been created over 20 years from gravel and sand extraction by Lafarge Aggregates.

It has two lakes, woodland and meadows and is part of the Wherryman’s Way, a 35 mile riverside walk from Norwich to Gt Yarmouth. It is also part of Sustrans national cycle network.
