New planning document updates policy to protect the Broads' special qualities
The Broads Authority has updated its planning policies to strengthen the protection of the special character of the Broads whilst allowing for essential development.
The Authority has adopted its Development Management Policies Development Plan Document (DPD) which sets out the detailed policies for determining planning applications for at least the next ten years.
Cally Smith, Head of Development Management, said: “This is an important document which puts us in a strong position to protect the countryside and conservation interests in the Broads. The Government has been consulting on its draft national planning policy framework which appears to relax control over development in the countryside unless the local planning authorities have up to date plans so the adoption of this new document is very timely.”
The biggest change is the introduction of a new policy that allows for residential moorings in certain areas. The site will need to meet a set of criteria including the availability of local services and good access. It would mean that some residential moorings may be permitted in marinas and other built up areas.
Cally Smith said “The updated policies continue to concentrate new development in settlements and supports the tourism industry, protecting boatyards from inappropriate development.”
The new document, which is part of the Broads Local Development Framework, updates the 1997 Broads Local Plan and has been the subject of widespread consultation over the last couple of years.
