Trinity Broads
Introduction
The Trinity Broads are situated north-west of Great Yarmouth. Despite the name, the Trinity Broads area covers five broads: Ormesby, Rollesby, Ormesby Little, Lily and Filby.
The area directly managed by the Broads Authority is 36 sq km. It consists of 1.66 sq km of open water, surrounded by open fen and wet woodland. The area was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1998 and is now a part of the Broads Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
Essex & Suffolk Water owns the majority of the site. In 1995 a partnership between the Broads Authority, Essex & Suffolk Water, the Environment Agency and English Nature (now Natural England) was formed. The aim of this partnership is to restore the ecological status of the Trinity Broads for the benefit of nature conservation, public water supply and recreation.
Vision
We have the following vision statements that inspire our work at the Trinity Broads:
- Water quality - Clear, low nutrient water in the Trinity Broads that supports diverse communities of aquatic wildlife and provides a public supply of high quality drinking water.
- Habitat - A landscape that is comprised of interconnecting shallow lakes, dykes, open fen and wet woodland supporting a diversity of plants and animals.
- Recreation - A place where people come to enjoy the quiet recreation of the area, exploring the water by boat and enjoying views of the broads from hides and walkways. People pursue recreational activities that are compatible with the Trinity Broads' special qualities, both environmentally sensitive and socially acceptable, for example fishing, bird watching, boating and sailing.
-
Local Community - Local ownership of the site is appreciated through the involvement of local people in management issues, practical conservation work, events and school projects.
