Upper Thurne
Upper Thurne
The Upper Thurne is situated in the north east of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, and comprises the River Thurne and Hickling Broad, Heigham Sound and Duck Broad, Horsey Mere and Martham North and South Broad. This complex wetland system it further linked by a mosaic of reedbeds, fens and drained marshes.
The wild quality of the Upper Thurne is a haven for wildlife and creates a special place for people to enjoy the recreation opportunities it has to offer including sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and, during the summer months, coarse fishing.
The Upper Thurne Working Group, which consists of a range of interested parties, including statutory and non-statutory bodies, has interests in natural resources, recreation and the local community. This group has developed the Upper Thurne Water Space Management Plan to enable the implementation of an integrated and sustainable approach to managing the Upper Thurne water space and its surrounding water catchment area.
