Bungay Castle
Remains of Norman castle in the centre of Bungay, built by the Bigod family in 1165, with twin towers and massive flint walls. Also visitor centre with a model of medieval Bungay. Burgh Castle
Remains of 3rd century Roman fort built to defend the coast from Saxon raiders. Situated on the edge of the River Waveney with views over Breydon Water and Halvergate Marshes. Open: daily. Tearoom and information available from Easter - Oct.
Caister Roman Site
Remains of a Roman commercial port, at Caister-on-Sea near Great Yarmouth. Open: daily.
Loddon, Hales Hall
15th century barn, gardens. Open: 9 Jan - 22 Dec Mon-Sat 10.30-4, Easter - Sept Sun 11-4. Closed some Saturdays for private functions, please telephone 01508 548507 to check.
Ludham, St Benet's Abbey
Derelict wind pump and ruins of Benedictine monastery founded in the ninth century and re-endowed by King Cnut in the 11th century, located on the edge of the River Bure. Open: daily.
Ranworth, St Helen's Church
The 'Cathedral of the Broads', dating back to 1370 with high tower offering wonderful views. Also visitor centre housing a photographic display on East Anglian churches. Open: daily.
St Olaves Priory
Remains of 13th century Augustinian priory, situated near the bridge on the banks of the River Waveney. A key to the vaulted brick undercroft is available from the Priory House. Tel (01493) 488609. Open: daily.
Somerleyton Hall
Impressive house rebuilt in 1846, gardens, garden trail, maze and miniature railway. Open: Easter - Oct Thurs, Sun and bank holidays, also July and Aug Tue and Wed: Gardens 11-5.30, Hall 1-5 (last admission 4.30). Gardens are also open on Sundays from Nov-Dec.
