I am a geographer and spent most of my academic career in University College London before coming home to Norwich and joining the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA in 2006. I grew up in the Fens and have always been fascinated by wetlands and the powerful emotions they invoke in people. My expertise is in public and stakeholder engagement in environmental decision-making.
I have contributed to the work of key national organisations including the Countryside Commission, English Nature, the Countryside Agency, the Environment Agency and Defra. I was a board member of the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute in Aberdeen and, until I returned to Norwich in 2006, I chaired the board of Global Action Plan, a national charity committed to helping individuals and organisations develop more environmentally-sustainable practices.
I have known and loved the Broads landscapes since I was a child, and have recently taken up the challenge of learning to sail with the expert tuition from sailors at the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club in Wroxham.
I was appointed as a member in 2012 and was elected Chair of the Broads Authority from 2015-2018.
