Scattering of ashes in the Broads area

The Broads is a cherished place that holds special memories for many, which is why we often receive enquiries about scattering ashes here.

You can scatter ashes in the Broads by hiring a boat or using a public area on a river or tidal stretch of water, ensuring you follow the guidelines below issued by the Environment Agency and Broads Authority:

  • Ashes themselves do not harm water quality, but no other items (e.g. wreaths, tributes, personal objects) should be placed in the water as they may pollute the area or harm wildlife.
  • Make sure you do not scatter ashes near water treatment plants or water sources. Choose a site carefully that is not near buildings, people swimming/fishing, or marinas and is at least 1 km upstream from any water abstraction point (check with the Environment Agency via phoning 03708 506 506 or emailing enquiries@environment-agency.gov.uk).
  • Spread ashes close to the water surface where possible and avoid windy conditions to prevent affecting others nearby.
  • If the site is in regular use, it may need assessment to ensure safety for water quality and other users. Faith leaders or undertakers can advise.
  • If all recommendations are followed, no direct permission is needed. If not, contact the Environment Agency for advice on alternative sites.

You could also consider a boat charter, for example the Museum of the Broads offers boat charters for scattering ashes in a special, private way.

We ask that those scattering ashes are mindful of others. Finding a private area for your special moment is of course recommended, so try to avoid scattering ashes in places with a lot of people, such a bridge over a river used by boaters, close to a marina/ boatyard to close to anglers/walkers to ensure that other users are not upset or inconvenienced.

If you are not on a public waterway, you would need landowner permission. This is generally not the case for the Broads as the majority of the waterways where people tend to want to scatter ashes are publicly accessed. If you want to scatter ashes on private land, including land owned by a business or charity, then please speak to them directly.
