Electric charging post survey feedback

During November, the Broads Authority completed a public questionnaire on the proposed transition from pre-paid electricity cards to an app-based payment system at 24-hour moorings.

The responses from boat owners, holidaymakers and visitors have provided valuable feedback that will now guide the tender process to procure the most effective and inclusive metering and payment solution. Funding for the upgrade of the electric charge points at 24-hour moorings has come from a one-off capital allocation from DEFRA, in addition to the National Park revenue grant.

Feedback revealed strong enthusiasm for modernisation, with many participants welcoming the convenience of app-based payments and the environmental benefits of moving away from 'single-use' plastic cards (which require reloading before each use). Respondents described the proposal as “forward-looking” and “a better solution” for the future of providing electricity at moorings.

At the same time, the consultation highlighted practical concerns that need to be addressed through the procurement process.

Connectivity challenges were raised repeatedly, with boaters noting the patchy mobile signal across the Broads. Ways to ensure connectivity for users will be an integral part of the tender requirement.

Inclusivity was another key theme, with respondents emphasising the need to ensure that older users and those with concerns over smartphone security are not excluded. The Authority will require the successful supplier to provide step-by-step guides and assistance to reassure vulnerable groups.

Respondents also raised concerns that credit on the existing card system could be lost during the change. A facility to transfer credit will be a key part of any new system, ensuring users do not lose out on credit they have already purchased.

The Broads Authority will now use this feedback to shape the tender specification for the new system. Requirements will include resilience in areas with weaker mobile coverage, information and support for all users, meeting government standards for online security and usability, and sustainability features that reduce reliance on plastic.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the consultation and gave us your feedback, we will communicate updates as the project progresses.
