Repair Works to Reedham Swing Bridge

We have been informed by Network Rail that Reedham swing bridge remains unable to open to boating traffic.  At a meeting earlier today, Network rail gave the following update:

  • A mechanical failure at Reedham swing bridge means we can’t regularly and reliably open the bridge to let boats pass through.
  • Following recent investigations, we have found that the centre bearing of the bridge has failed. The bearing forms part of the main pivot, helping to support the bridge as it opens and closes.
  • Our teams are currently finalising a plan to carry out the necessary repairs, which will involve a significant programme of engineering. We’ve already started preparatory works on the bridge and we have written to neighbours in Reedham so they know that we’ll be using some noisy equipment at times.
  • In order to try and maintain some access for boat users during the first phase of the works, we’re carrying out tests to see if we can manually swing the bridge on a limited basis at pre-arranged times without causing further mechanical issues or damaging the bridge.
  • Train services are not affected by the fault, although the repair is likely to require a small number of weekend line closures.

The Authority will remain in close contact with Network Rail to ensure boat users have the latest updates on the bridge as the key summer holiday period approaches.
